Night one, were were front row in front of Jeff. It was incredible. I have never been so close before and it was like nothing else I've ever experienced at a concert. The setlist was pretty good but the energy was off the charts. We couldn't hear Ed well at all in part because the arena was deafening. The setlist ran:

#1: Wasted Reprise
#2: Life Wasted
#3: Animal
#4: Corduroy
#5: Severed Hand
#6: World Wide Suicide
#7: Even Flow
#8: I Am Mine
#9: Gods´ Dice
#10: Given To Fly
#11: Do The Evolution
#12: Wishlist
(Why Can´t I Touch It?)
#13: Lukin
#14: Not For You
(Modern Girl)
#15: Comatose
#16: Elderly Woman...
#17: Jeremy
#18: Why Go
Encore 1
#19: Last Kiss
#20: Inside Job
#21: Black
#22: Crazy Mary
#23: Alive
Encore 2
#24: Big Wave
#25: Better Man
#26: Leash
#27: Baba O´Riley
#28: Yellow Ledbetter

During the show we scored 2 of Mike's picks and afterward I got a used Ed pick tossed over by his guitar tech. Needless to say, I was thrilled. It only got better as I was able to shake Ed's hand as he was leaving the venue. Unreal.

Night two was a great stand alone show. the setlist ran:

#1: Severed Hand
#2: Corduroy
#3: Hail, Hail
#4: Save You
#5: World Wide Suicide
#6: Dissident
#7: Even Flow
#8: Army Reserve
#9: State Of Love And Trust
#10: I Got Shit
#11: Garden
#12: Do The Evolution
#13: Sad
#14: Daughter
(It´s Okay)
#15: Insignificance
#16: Black
#17: Rearviewmirror
Encore 1
#18: Portugal improv
#19: Come Back
#20: I Believe In Miracles
#21: Big Wave
#22: Once
#23: Footsteps
#24: Alive
Encore 2
#25: Wasted Reprise
#26: Better Man
#27: Smile
#28: Why Go
#29: Rockin´ In The Free World
#30: Yellow Ledbetter/(Little Wing)

As a second night in the same city there were perhaps too many repeats but, we got the longest set thus far of the Euro tour and some real classics, including Massaman out of order, "Garden", "Why Go" and "Smile". I also love "Army Reserve" and "Sad". "I Got Shit" is always welcome and the "It's Okay" tag made up for having to miss out on it in Dublin. Getting "Come Back" means I only have one more song to see live off of the new album. We were in front of Stone on the barrier for night two. The sound was a lot better but it's a lot more exciting being in front of Mike and Jeff in all honesty. We did get two of Stone's picks after the show, so now need only one of Jeff's to complete the set. I wasn't able to get any pictures during night two as the new memory card I bought for my camera refused to work with it and I failed to bring a back up. It's not a big deal and I'll just make up for it at Bern and Torino I guess.

Regine and I met a lot of great fans from all over the world including Germany, Norway, Sweden, France, Portugal and the Netherlands and we're looking forward to catching up with some of them again in Bern next week. What a good time.

Thanks, but missy? I'm definitely a mister and either way, my lips are sealed.

The pics were between the two shows but you just have to be ready for them really. They literally come your way.

Awesome pictures, man! Thanks for sharing.

Dude, you're so lucky. They were here in DC for only one night.
And I envy you. I wish they would've performed Baba O'Riley.
That's my favorite Who covered-song.

Holy fuck Jeff. The one show I caught of PJ here in SF was sort of a let down. Mike was a little off all night, and I'm now of the opinion that Matt Cameron is sort of a chode. They played forever, though, and the set was solid. I even got an MFC. But man, if I'd been that close, it probably would have been a different show entirely.

Miss ya, buddy. Hope things are well over there.

A let down? With "Watchtower", "Leash", "Sad", and "Red Mos" amongst others? Damn...

I'm curious as to why you think Matt's a chode though. Regine doesn't much like him and I'm just wondering how people even come to such conclusions about the guy sitting in the back.

Yeah, man, no complaints about the setlist. Watchtower seemed a little extraneous, but Leash was awesome. There was even a Present Tense in there, which was awesome--way better than I'd ever heard it before. Ironically enough, I think that much was due to Matt. He really slayed on that song. There were some flubs that I'd just never heard before in Pearl Jam--maybe I've just seen too many technically-amazing players these past few years, and I'm holding the guys in PJ to an unfair standard, but I'm just calling it like I saw it.

As for my criticism of Matt, it's not a character evaluation. He just has that one thing he does--that heavy handed, heavy kick drum, straight-ahead way of attacking every tune. And while it sounds great on a lot of PJ tunes, I'm afraid the guy just doesn't have much range. He's great at creating this HUGE, powerful wave of percussion (which lends itself really well to tunes like Present Tense--the tune had this DEEP, almost African, bass drum beat behind it), but sometimes, particularly when the band tries to launch an extended jam on a tune, Matt seems to really struggle with finding his place in the groove.

But the biggest head-scratcher of the night was Mike trying to pull off Star-Spangled Banner at the end of the show. Not only was it sort of uncalled for (Mike, we already know you worship Jimi--it's cool, it's your thing--but this is kind of his turf already), it was also pretty rough--he was really struggling to find the melody and hit a lot of real bonker notes. For a moment there, I felt like I was watching somebody's dad who insisted on playing his 18-year old kid's graduation party. Not that Mike's not usually amazing. A lot of the time I feel like he could back off from playing so many notes... There was a time when he didn't shred like he does now, and I thought his playing was generally more powerful as a result. Still, what he does now is pretty impressive, and like I said, I think he might have just been having an off night.

I was also a little disappointed in the crowd. Not PJ's fault, of course, but the venue was pretty crowded, and I guess fights were breaking out down on the main floor. I started out the show down there, but got freaked out by the vibe, and so retreated to the balcony.

Okay, but that's all the bashing I can do. Even if it wasn't the greatest show I've seen, it was still a great show. EV sounded phenomenal--best I've heard him since like 1994. It was a trip to see them all having such a good time.

And exhale. That was maybe a little more in-depth than you were looking for. I was bummed that we never got a chance to talk about it before.

I think the band has sounded great this tour in general. I've never really known what makes a great drummer so I guess I can't really comment on Matt's abilities. I would just generally agree that he's been one of the weaker PJ drummers. As for Mike, I dunno, seeing him live is just amazing. He's so into it and really adds to the shows. Thankfully we won't get any of that SSB over here. I agree that he really shouldn't bother trying to immitate Jimi.

As for the fans, I've heard lots of bad things about the US fans this tour. That said, the Lisbon crowd shits on any group of fans I've ever seen anywhere. It was nuts.

I'm off to the Bern, Switzerland show (flying out to Germany tomorrow morning) and then over to Italy for 3 shows... Hopefully they will be as good or exceed the Lisbon experience.
